DOUGIE LAMPKIN is racing to get a new high-powered engine in his latest bike -- after a disappointing performance at the Sheffield Indoor Trial last weekend.

He was riding a standard factory Montesa machine and could not compete with the reigning World Indoor Champion Adam Raga fellow Spaniard Albert Cabestany and Japanese star .

"Everyone in the team knew it was going to be a difficult task to come here and get a result on the standard bike, especially when Raga and Cabestany are riding so well.

"The good news is that it looks like we will have factory engines for the next round. It is clear that the standard bike is lacking power when it comes to World Class indoor hazards. The standard bike is designed for average riders and for national standard sections, and in that respect it is a great bike."

Dougie has dominated the Sheffield trial since it was launched 10 years ago, with a total of eight wins an a runner-up spot before last weekend's event.

Lampkin lost out to his team mate Fujinami, as the pair scrapped it out for the last place in the three man final.

"I was deeply disappointed as the Sheffield event means so much to me. I was really disappointed for my loyal fans, and the fact that it was not an ideal first outing on the new bike.

"It's certainly not been a brilliant start, but one trial is not a championship. We have work to do, but I am confident that as the bike develops we will be in a position to get back to winning ways."

Reigning World Indoor champion Adam Raga was a worthy winner was in a class of his own during the heat. Despite his margin of victory being reduced in the final he never looked under any real threat. Albert Cabestany made a fairy tale debut on the factory Sherco, the ex-Beta rider taking the runner's up spot having quickly adapted to his new bike.

Whilst never in contention to take the main trophy, Fujinami did a professional job to put the new Montesa on the podium on its first international outing.

The Yeadon-Guiseley Motor Club stage their first championship trial at Addingham Moorside, above Silsden, on Sunday and expect over one hundred riders to take part.

The World Indoor Trials positions after the first round are: 1 Adam Raga (Spain) Gas Gas, 10; 2 Albert Cabestany (Spain) Sherco, 8; 3 Takahisa Fujinami (Japan) Honda HRC, 6; 4 Dougie Lampkin (GB) Montesa HRC 5; 5 Marc Freixa (Spain) Montesa HRC, 4; 6 Jeroni Fajardo (Spain) Gas Gas, 3; 7 Tadeusz Blazusiak (Poland) Gas Gas, 2.
