Residents are considering setting up vigilante patrols to protect their cars after a series of vandal attacks by unruly teenagers.

Hundreds of pounds of damage has been caused by youngsters ripping off wing mirrors, smashing windows and jumping on roofs and bonnets.

Residents living in flats at Hall Lane, Windhill, Shipley, say they have endured months of hell with gangs of teenagers roaming the street late at night.

Security officer Peter Grant, 61, said he had to get rid of his Ford Escort after the thugs jumped on the bonnet and kicked off the mirrors. But the VW Polo he bought for £800 to replace it has already been attacked three times.

He said: "The first time they smashed the windscreen, then they destroyed the mirrors and last weekend they caused £300 damage by smashing off the mirrors again and jumping on the bonnet leaving a big bulge in it.

"I had to take three days off work after the last attack because I couldn't drive the car and all of this has made me unwell.

"Last weekend there were about 20 kids, boys and girls, aged about 14 or 15, and they went down the street vandalising about a dozen cars. They did another four or five cars on Friday night but fortunately I was at work so mine did not get damaged."

Mr Grant said the residents had asked police to put on more patrols in the area and they had promised to put surveillance in place.

Eric Hymas, who lives in nearby Wrose Brow Road, said some residents were so frustrated they had discussed setting up night-time vigilante patrols next weekend to guard their vehicles.
