For most teenagers spending their summer holidays without access to electricity or running water would sound like a nightmare.

But Laura Malin hopes it will be the experience of a lifetime as she jets out to teach English to African children.

The 18-year-old, from Allerton, has finished her A-levels and is planning to go to University to study medicine next year.

However this summer she will be getting used to a different type of classroom as she works as a volunteer teacher in a school for the Masai tribe in Tanzania.

The settlement she will be staying in for three months has no electricity or running water and the nearest shops will be two-and-a-half hours away.

Laura will be attempting to teach English to children who have never heard a word of the language or come into contact with English people before.

The Masai warrior tribe are semi- nomadic and live on the border of Kenya and Tanzania. They are famous for retaining their historic customs.

Laura says she is not daunted by the challenge and is looking forward to meeting people from another culture.

She said: "I decided that I wanted to have a gap year to do something like this before I started University.

"I am going to teach children English which should be quite difficult considering they do not know any English words.

"We will have no running water and no electricity for three months. I am nervous about the hygiene side of it. I have seen pictures of the kitchens and they have nothing inside them."

Laura will teach the children alongside Tanzanian staff and another 18-year-old Briton as part of the World Challenge Expeditions trip.

She said: "I have done some training which has involved us holding up items and repeating the word to get the children to understand what it is. And hopefully after three months they will start to show some improvements."

She is working as both a receptionist at Bradford Royal Infirmary and a support assistant at Bradford College to raise the £4,000 needed for the trip and is appealing for sponsors to help her reach her target.
