A racing syndicate at a Bradford pub has scooped a £10,000 jackpot.

And the punters, from the Lord Clyde pub on Thornton Road, now reckon it's all eyes on Ascot when they hope their own horse will take to the track.

The team emerged with the best record for January to collect Racing Post's top monthly prize.

They picked ten horses for £10 each at the start of the jump season last November and the winner is the syndicate with the best-performing horses over a month's racing.

It means they could be on track for the annual £550,000 jackpot. But for them the "dead cert" is when Ascot moves to York this summer.

The group, made up of sandwich-maker Doug McLean, bingo hall manager Kevin Dean, solicitor Michael Ryan, landlord Sean Dwyer, builder Martin Hubbard and concrete contractor Richard Simpson, will hopefully have their own horse - Tiffin Jo - running at the premier flat race meeting of the season.

Their Racing Post win works out at about £1,600 each and they held a beer and champagne celebration at the pub on Monday.

Doug, from Wyke, said when the man from the Racing Post telephoned he thought it was a wind-up and acted so coolly he later had ring back and apologise.

"I thought, I am not going to jump up and down. I usually check the results but didn't this time. Then I checked the internet and found Lord Clyde Racing had won.

"It was the first time for us. I rang the bloke back and said sorry for acting so strangely."

A win from a horse called Well Chief clinched it for them on Saturday.

The group are big racing fans and visit the tracks around the country.

Doug added: "It is an expensive business but the thrill of it all is unbeatable. We are all looking forward to when Ascot comes to York. To end up in the winners' enclosure there, for real, would be something else."

The Royal Meeting is at York while the course at Ascot undergoes extensive refurbishment.
