The family of a Wyke teenager seriously injured in a car accident are maintaining their vigil by his bedside.

Anthony Lily, 17, collided with a car as he crossed the road outside Oddfellows Hall pub, on Towngate, Wyke, on Saturday night.

He was injured in the collision with a red Vauxhall Corsa, just after 11pm, and taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary. On Sunday Anthony, of Methuen Oval, Wyke, was transferred to Leeds General Infirmary, where his condition was critical.

This morning his condition had stabilised.

Anthony's brother, Gareth, said the teenager's mum, Sandra Lily, had been called to the scene of the accident by friends and went with Anthony to BRI. She has been at his bedside since the accident.

Gareth, 21, had unwittingly driven past the accident in a taxi on his way into the city centre that night.

He said: "We drove past the accident at around 11pm but I did not think anything of it until my aunt called me later on and told me my brother had been seriously hurt.

"I went straight to hospital to see him and he was in a bad way on a life support machine.

"The doctors told us that it was a miracle he survived. He just looked so still in hospital and we feared the worst.

"On Sunday he looked to be getting much better. He was taken off sedation and was conscious. He recognised all of us and knew where he was and what had happened.

"However on Monday we found he had taken a turn for the worse. Doctors had found a blood clot on his brain and placed him back on sedation."

He added: "We are really upset, particularly our mum. We're all just trying to think positively and hope for the best."

Pat Feeny, landlady of the Oddfellows Arms, witnessed the accident.

"I was outside the pub when it happened," she said. "I was seeing a customer off into a taxi and saw Anthony on this side of the road. A friend was shouting over to him and he was running across the road to talk to him.

"Next thing I knew he had been thrown up in the air. It came as a real shock to me and all of the regulars. His mum Sandra used to work here and I've known the family for about ten years."
