Two people were due to appear in court today, charged with the murder of a Bradford man whose dismembered body was found on moorland eight years ago.

A 38-year-old woman of Bierley, Bradford, and a 39-year-old Batley man are accused of the murder of Leonard Fulbirg.

The decapitated remains of Mr Fulbirg, known as Lennie, were found in a lay-by on the A6033 Hebden Bridge Road above Oxenhope, in March 1997.

His body had been dismembered and set on fire. His head, arms and legs have still not been found.

Four-times married Mr Fulbirg, 49, a father of 32 children, disappeared on August 11, 1996. He left the home of his brother, Robert, in Buttershaw, Bradford, saying he was going to meet a woman friend at the McDonald's restaurant in Rooley Lane, Bradford, but was never seen alive again.

It took police several years to establish the identity of the body. That was eventually achieved due to advances in DNA technology.

Detectives obtained a DNA profile from the skeletal remains which was checked against information held by the Missing Persons Bureau.

A handful of people matched the description of a white man of a certain age and swabs were then taken from members of their families which confirmed the torso was Mr Fulbirg.

Last year police carried out a major search of Oxenhope Moor in a bid to find his skull and limbs but found nothing.

Mr Fulbirg, who had 32 children, was unemployed but often undertook casual work buying and selling horses, jewellery and other goods.

He was described by police as a real-life 'Del Boy' who loved to wheel and deal.

He was born in Newcastle, where he still has brothers and sisters.

His brother Robert and his family still live in Bradford and his elderly parents are still alive.

The man and woman accused of his murder were due to appear before Bradford magistrates today.

They had been arrested on Monday by a team of detectives led by Detective Superintendent Phil Sedgwick..
