Ben Rhydding 2

After the long travelling over the last few weeks this trip to Chester felt like a local derby!

With many years together in the Northern Premier League prior to being promoted to the National League, these two teams have played each other numerous times over the last few years and know each others game well.

This was a much wanted and well-worked victory, but to be honest it wasn't the most exciting game to either to play in or watch. Ben Rhydding were always the stronger side - they showed their superiority from the start and their opponents never really offered a great threat.

It would however been easy to lower the standard of play to that of Chester's, but this, Rhydding did not let happen.

Although Ben Rhydding dominated the play, Chester looked dangerous on the break so the defence unit of Issy MacDonald, Leanne Brook and Rachel Laycock had to ensure they maintained discipline at the back, which they did.

Ironically it was from a Chester attack that nearly resulted in a goal for them, that Rhydding scored their first.

A quick ball from defence was accurately sent to Rachel Doherty who fed it to Selina Reidy with only the 'keeper to beat.

This she did in style, with a spectacular shot to put the visitors one goal up.

The second-half was much as the first - Jackie Barrett on the right linked well with Sarah Male and Anne Thornborrow and numerous chances came Rhydding's way.

The second goal came from determined play in front of the goal by Catherine French, and it was Reidy who scored her and Rhydding's second, half way through the second-half.

This was a professional and clinical display of hockey by the ladies and these three points now put them in fifth place in the league with just one match to go. This final game is on Saturday against league leaders Bradford.

Men's Fifths 5

Harrogate 1

Ben Rhydding fifths season was completed in fine style at the Harrogate Hockey Club headquarters with a resounding defeat of the traditional rivals.

The scoring was opened quickly by Hall with a neat lob over the 'keeper. Hall added two more as did Jerram and Stell got the other.
