Zulu warriors descended on Silsden to teach schoolchildren the art of African song and dance.

The Mighty Zulu Nation dance troupe visited Hothfield Junior School to launch the school's summer term enrichment programme.

The programme is entitled The World Around Us, and each year group will spend afternoons studying a geographical area in depth -- learning about its culture, art and environmental issues. Year three will study Silsden, year four Africa, year five Asia and year six South America.

The entertainers from Zulu Nation, clad in animal skins and waving shields and spears, performed energetic dance routines, gave children in year three and four an insight into African folklore and culture and taught them some African songs. The children, with the help of the Zulu Nation, then went on to illustrate what they had learned with a performance of song and dance for their parents.

Deputy head teacher Ruth Leech said: "They have been absolutely lovely with the children. The whole atmosphere was electric and at one point the whole gym floor was vibrating.

"Who said school was boring? Every single child was captivated."

The Mighty Zulu Nation was formed in 1994 and is made up of dancers who have gained fame and international recognition for their mesmerising and powerful performances to audiences worldwide.

The group, currently based in Huddersfield, is part funded by the Arts Council as part of the cultural diversity programme.
