The first steps are being taken to set up an organisation which will return civic pride to Bradford.

A meeting is being organised to set up a civic trust or society to preserve the city's architectural gems and encourage stunning modern designs.

Letters are being sent out to Bradford Council, groups and individuals about a launch.

It comes as Bradford Centre Regeneration begins to implement international architect Will Alsop's visionary masterplan.

Construction is also expected to start next year on the £300 million Broadway shopping scheme.

The demolition of 1960s Forster House and Midland House has already opened up the view of imposing Victorian buildings.

And the development will link the rest of the city with historic Little Germany through the demolition of the unattractive Petergate shop and office block.

Now the first meeting is being planned to set up a society which will protect the old and encourage the new as the city as redeveloped.

Katie Bishop, the first development officer for the Yorkshire and Humber Association of Civic Societies, is contacting voluntary organisations and Bradford Council with a view to setting up the new organisation.

She is also inviting anyone interested in taking part to contact her.

She said: "It is crucial the community has a say at this time of great change in Bradford.

"It is a time not only to preserve the existing buildings but enhance the character of Bradford and provide complementary new architecture."

A steering committee is expected to be set up at the meeting which is likely to be held in July.

Bradford previously had a civic society but it closed in the 1990s. Most other major cities have them.

Anyone interested in joining and setting up a society is being asked to contact Katie Bishop on (07981) 622706.
