EMOTIONS ran high at this year's county council elections.

Craven Liberal Democrats were celebrating after securing three out of the six seats available.

Mark Wheeler takes over from Irene Greaves after receiving 184 more votes than John Binns (Con).

David Heather steps up for Ribblesdale, a seat previously held by Liberal Democrat Beth Graham, beating Richard Welch (Con).

Polly English takes up the seat of Skipton West after gaining 1,714 votes ahead of Mike Hill (Ind) and Paul Whitaker (Con).

Mrs English said that it was "wonderful" to see the Liberal Democrats doing so well in Craven.

Robert Heseltine (Ind) was left speechless after winning the Skipton East seat from Alex Bentley (Con). Andy Solloway also lost out on the seat.

Shelagh Marshall kept hold of her new extended ward with a comfortable 1,121 lead over opponent David Beer (Lib Dem).

"I am very, very pleased indeed. I am pleased for my supporters and very pleased that so many people came out to vote," she said.

In South Craven independent candidate Philip Barrett re-gained his seat with a landslide victory of 2,860 votes over Norman Spence who gained just 870.
