Bradford's first dedicated Bollywood cinema could be turned into a gym, conference centre, or even a mosque.

Nirmal Singh, the owner of the Marlboro Cinema in Carlisle Road, Manningham, has put the site on the market with a £700,000 price tag.

Mr Singh said today he was selling up because he was unable to spend enough time developing the business but added that the sale was already attracting interest.

He said: "We have had inquiries from people wanting to turn the building into a carpet warehouse, mosque, health centre and conference centre."

Mr Singh, 54, bought the building in 1984 to screen Bollywood films, but said its location near a mosque deterred would-be filmgoers.

Once touted as Yorkshire's first dedicated Bollywood cinema, the 8,551sq ft building suffered massive damage after an arson attack just six months after it opened in 2000.

Developers helped the former warehouse rise from the ashes and it has since been used as a marriage hall.

Around £60,000 from the Manningham and Girlington Single Regeneration Budget was sunk into the project in a bid to create employment in the area. But residents said they feared noise and traffic and claimed it would have an adverse affect on the neighbouring Carlisle Road mosque.

Mr Singh said: "I reckon this is the only building of its kind left in Bradford."

The building has two storeys which incorporate a main function hall with mezzanine level, storage rooms, kitchens and offices.

Consent has been obtained to extend the mezzanine floor of the building, extending total floor space by 4,000 sq ft.
