A day-old porcupine – yet to develop its quills – was among the animals that paid a visit to Ashlands Primary School.
Children were thrilled to help feed the Indian crested porcupine, so small she could fit into the palm of a hand.
The baby was born just 24 hours before the Pet Wise mobile zoo came to Ilkley, and is being hand-reared by its owners.
The mobile zoo also brought other exotic animals, including snakes, lizards, and a giant millipede, plus chinchillas and guinea pigs.
The event linked to the school’s teaching theme of jungle animals for nursery and reception-aged children.
Teacher Sarah Clewes said: “The porcupine proved to be a big hit with the children who where amazed at her tiny size and how she needed to be kept warm and fed on a regular basis, almost like a newborn baby.”
