Shipley member Fred Linkogel was the talk of the

clubhouse after holing in one on the picturesque seventh during last week's Henry Robinson Trophy - a fourball competition for rabbits.

Fred talked his way through the shot in detail to an enthralled audience - and it is easy to understand why.

After hooking his tee shot into the water on the short seventh, the ball bounced back off a submerged rock and flew into the air, was caught on the wind and blew towards the green where it obligingly rolled against the pin.

And as Fred and his three colleagues approached the green, the wind again took hold to blow the flag pin - and the four watched amazed as the ball plopped into the hole.

Fred said: "I've heard about people

hitting the rocks and their ball flying back out - but never into the hole.

"When I took my tee shot and saw where it was going, I swore and banged my club down. There was a 40mph gale blowing and I saw the ball go into the water and then fly up again. The wind took hold and it ended up rolling towards the pin.

"When we walked towards the green and saw what happened next, we all fell about laughing."

Fred has hit one "proper" hole-in-one before - in Florida.

For the Shipley feat, he took an eight iron off the elevated tee. "I've been playing here for about 20 years and nothing like it has ever happened before," said the 68-year-old, who will no doubt be practising his hook shots for his next visit to the seventh tee.

Fred plays regularly with EGGS (the Elderly Gentlemen's Golfing Society) at Shipley.

Meanwhile, Mick Fallon won the Bradford Teachers' Golf Society Championships at a cold and windy Bingley St Ives.

Players had to contend with a hailstorm which turned the fairways and greens white.

Fallon scored 37 points off a handicap of 17. Runner-up was Tom Brennan (18) with 36 points. Jonathan Whalley (3) won the Men's Best Gross Trophy and Kay Johnson (26) won the ladies' Rosebowl.
