A Bradford councillor has been arrested and questioned in connection with a hit-and-run incident which killed a 20-year-old.

Conservative Councillor Intkhab Alam, who represents Great Horton, was arrested by detectives at his home a day after the fatal smash. He was held for two days and has now been released on police bail.

Christopher Benson was killed after being knocked down by a private hire car which failed to stop in Morley at around 2.20am on Sunday morning.

He died in Dewsbury District Hospital shortly after arrival. Police arrested Coun Alam, 30, of Sandford Road, Barkerend, at 4pm on Monday.

He was questioned after police applied for a warrant to hold him in custody for an extra 24 hours and then released.

Council and Conservative group leader Margaret Eaton said: "I understand that Councillor Intkhab Alam has been arrested by the police and allowed out on bail. In such circumstances I will be suspending him from the group during the period of investigation."

Police found the private hire vehicle which they believe was involved in the incident on fire in Bradford hours after the crash.

The silver Volkswagen Passat was discovered ablaze on Valley Road at 9.20am on Sunday.

Officers are appealing for anyone in Bradford who saw the car being driven in the seven hours between the collision and the fire.

Detective Inspector Mick McDermott, of Holbeck CID, who is leading the investigation said: "We have seven hours between the accident at 2.20am and 9.20am where the car must have been driven between Leeds and Bradford. It would have been damaged and possibly had a smashed windscreen.

"I have spoke to the family of Christopher Benson who are absolutely devastated and trying to come to terms with his death.

"This makes it even more important that we try to establish the truth of what happened at the scene on the accident."

DI McDermott has paid tribute to Christoper Benson was a popular young man who lived life to the full.

The 20-year-old lived in Morley and worked as a part-time barman.

DI McDermott said: "He was a good lad, he was outgoing and popular and enjoyed his life to the full.

"There are lots of flowers which are tied to the lamppost at the scene of the crash which goes to show how popular he was."
