GAVIN Hindle has added his name to the list of players hoping to take over the number two jersey at Wharfedale now John Lawn has retired.

Although he made three appearances for Dale at the start of last season, Hindle has spent most of his time playing and coaching at Skipton over the last nine months. But the 26-year-old hooker is now returning to the Avenue, where he has enjoyed nine seasons, having started there as a junior and making his first-team debut at the age of 18.

"Hopefully I can fill the position that John has left, but I'm not going with the impression that the shirt is mine. I know there are three other lads there who are good players and I'll have to work very hard," said Hindle.

John Lawn, new head coach at Wharfedale, said: "He's done very well by all accounts at Skipton and I helped him take a coaching session there. He sets a good example, particularly with his fitness levels."

Other players in contention for the hooker's role next season include Andrew Tindall, Dave Charnley and Patrick Gains.
