Bradford Catholic Players are presenting toe-tapping musical 42nd Street next week.

The show includes the numbers We’re In The Money, Lullaby Of Broadway and title song 42nd Street.

The first time the Catholic Players staged it was in 1994, when Sue Carroll played Peggy. This year the role is played by her daughter, Katie Carroll.

Katie’s twin, Eliza, is playing Lorraine Fleming. Mum Sue is taking the role of Anytime Annie, and dad Simon is playing Andie Lee, the choreographer. The showbiz family tree doesn’t stop there – Katie and Eliza’s aunt, Anne-Marie Carroll, is playing the senior lead role, Dorothy.

The show, directed by David Kirk and choreographed by Jacqui Drake-Sweiss, has a cast of 60 and opens with a spectacular tap-dancing number.

“There are some amazing tap routines. We even have 12 male dancers ‘strutting their stuff’ in Ziegfield style during the number Dames,” says spokeswoman Debbie Carroll.

The society raises funds for local charities from its productions. A total of £5,000 was raised for Martin House Children’s Hospice from last year’s production, Annie Get Your Gun. This year the chosen charities are the Marie Curie Hospice in Bradford and the Bradford and District Autism Support Group.

Says Debbie: “As an amateur society, we need to raise £72,000 to cover our costs before we can start accumulating funds to give to our nominated charities.

“We have secured sponsorship from Pace Micro Systems, Sovereign Health Care, Yorkshire Building Society, W Lever Ltd and The Carroll Cleaning Company Ltd – which assists greatly in the amount of money we’re finally able to donate.”

42nd Street runs at the Alhambra from Tuesday to Saturday. For tickets, ring (01274) 432000.
