A 25-year-old man had to clamber on to the roof of his pick-up truck when it became trapped in flood water near Skipton last night.

The man had tried to cross a ford in Pale Lane, Carleton, when the Nissan Navarro was flooded in water just before 9pm.

He phoned the fire service which sent two appliances from Skipton to the scene and a Land Rover to help the trapped man, who was discovered on the roof of his truck as the flood water kept rising.

Firefighters used waders and life jackets to reach the stranded man before pulling him to safety.

A spokesman from North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said the incident had happened near to an earlier rescue in Heslaker Lane when a 28-year-old woman became trapped in a Ford Focus car as water from the River Aire flooded the road.

The spokesman said: "The water was up to seat level and was flowing at such a speed that she was not able to make her way out of the car."

Fire crews from Skipton and specialist water rescue crews from Richmond and Whitby were scrambled to the scene when the woman phoned the emergency services at 5.30pm yesterday.

The Skipton crew used manpower to push the vehicle out of the flood water.
