Currently making a big noise on the West Yorkshire rock scene are the intriguingly-named Disco Machine Gun.

The band is made up of members of different Bradford-based bands, brought together via guitarist Dave “Disco” Barwick and vocalist Matt Broadbent’s songwriting sessions.

Drummer Danny Hensby and bass guitarist Deanos Kelly were already doing well in local band The Ebb, but had disagreements about which direction their music would go in.

“They wanted to go more blues-rocky, whereas I wanted to do dirty disco,” explains Deanos.

They joined forces with fifth member Rick Troth on keyboards to create a disco and electro dance style, with indie undertones.

It was a welcome move for Danny after years of playing in bands, “I get bored easily but I was excited about Disco Machine Gun,” he says.

After only two years of gigging, the band has established itself as one of the city’s best-known bands.

In September they won the opportunity to play alongside big-name acts such as The Doves and Calvin Harris at this year’s Bingley Music Live festival.

The competition consisted of two heats, an online vote in which DMG came second, and the live round at Shipley’s PM bar. They were up against Analog Bombs, Meet Me In Vegas and Little Black Hearts.

Matt admits that they weren’t on their best form that night.

“We were very unrehearsed, I had a throat infection and Disco had just fathered a baby, so we hadn’t practised for more than a month.”

They still managed to pull it off, though, creating an electric atmosphere for the crowd and judges.

Since the gig they have concentrated on writing new material and recording it for their long-awaited EP, due out this month. “People ask us all the time for a CD, it’s embarrassing really – we’ve been together two years!” says Deanos.

Rather than focus on profiting from their music, they took the decision to establish their fan base and create a buzz about their distinctive sound before releasing it to the public and trying to get a record deal.

It’s set to be another great year for the lads in 2010, with plans to approach record labels and play at larger venues throughout the UK.

Disco Machine Gun will be playing The Faversham in Leeds on December 3 (pay on the door). For more information, visit myspace.com/ discomachinegun
