A Polish man who skipped bail back to his homeland to avoid nine years in jail for his part in a horrific knife attack was behind bars this evening after handing himself in to police.

A judge previously sentenced Rafal Krajewski, 31, in his absence for his part in a shocking attack on fellow countryman Artur Wojtowicz during a two-hour orgy of violence at the victim’s home in Newforth Grove, Bowling, Bradford, on February 7, 2007.

Mr Wojtowicz suffered multiple stab wounds to his shoulder and was struck by a bottle after Krajewski, Remigiusz Klata, 26, Grzegorz Holubowicz, 29, went to his house on the pretence of getting together for a friendly drink.

But after being stabbed with the kitchen knife, Mr Wojtowickz was urinated on by his attackers in a final act of indignity.

Krajewski did not return to Bradford after initially admitting his part in the unprovoked attack.

He appeared at Bradford Crown Court yesterday to admit breaching his bail.

The court heard his bail conditions had been varied to allow him to go back to Poland to spend Christmas with his family but he then suffered mental health problems and was treated by a psychologist there. The court proceedings for the earlier attack had brought on a “depressive episode”, and Krajewski had been a drug addict, which had compounded his mental health problems said his barrister, Giles Bridge.

That is why he did not return to Britain to answer charges in January.

A European arrest warrant was issued for the fugitive but he handed himself in to police in Milton Keynes in September.

Mr Bridge said: “The psychologist decided that all that could be done had been done and he said his mental health had improved dramatically.

“He came back to the UK to sort this case out.”

Recorder Jonathan Sandiford jailed Krajewski for four months for breaching bail, to run concurrently with his nine-year sentence for wounding.

The judge said he would not sentence Klata, who is still believed to be in Poland, and made a fresh plea to find him.

He said: “The reality is that he would not start serving any sentence imposed in this court until he is found.”
