More than 150 homes had to be evacuated tonight amid fears that volatile gas cylinders could explode in a garage fire.
The area was cordoned off by police as firefighters battled to stop three cylinders from exploding in the heat of the blaze.
Residents in Thornhill Terrace, Leeds Old Road, Barkerend and surrounding streets were told to leave their homes as the drama unfolded.
Many went to stay with relatives or friends, but about 18 people, including several children, spent the night in the Richard Dunn sports centre at Odsal.
Firefighters said three gas cylinders were discovered in the blaze including an acetylene cylinder, a highly flammable gas, often used for welding. Chris Booth, station commander at Bradford Fire Station, said the area could be cordoned off for 24 hours to allow the cylinders to cool down.
