Victoria Park in Calverley has been named the best public park in the region as part of Yorkshire in Bloom 2009.

This year the Yorkshire Rose Public Park Award has been presented to Leeds City Council for the high quality and standard of the park.

Judges said how impres-sed they were with the floral and environmental quality of the park, which has significantly improved over the last few years.

Funding by Parks Renaissance Initiative, which helps revitalise community parks and green spaces across Leeds, has helped boost the park.

Deputy leader of Leeds City Council, Councillor Andrew Carter, said: β€œI am delighted our fantastic community park has been recognised by Yorkshire in Bloom for its excellent standards.

β€œIt is a wonderful area and has got better and better over the last few years.”
