A school which has been running an annual Community Sunday for three years has been nominated in the Telegraph & Argus Bradford’s Best Community Awards.

Springwood Community Prim-ary has been nominated for the Best School Community Project for its work in bringing the various communities of Bradford together.

The school, in Wood Street, Manningham, Bradford, started the annual project in 2005 and it has since become a regular feature of the community’s calendar.

The aim was to bring the community together with football, music, dancing, fashion shows and arts and crafts.

The main event is an inner-city team of young men taking on a semi-professional club at football.

Parents, carers, relatives and friends are all welcome and entrance to the match is free.

The event also sees a range of information stalls including local businesses and Government agencies.

Last year stalls at the event included West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, Kick It Out, Yorkshire Ambulance, Careers – Youth Service, and the Kids University at the University of Bradford.

Sponsors last year also included Football in the Community, Bradford City, West Yorkshire Football Academy and the Bradford City Football Club Supporters Trust.

The nomination says that without the initial idea from Khalil Hussain, of Springwood Community Primary, and the school’s work to establish this project, it would not have become the successful event it is today.

The school itself was this month recognised for bringing the wider world into the classroom when it received the International School Award at a ceremony held in London.

The honour, which was presented by the Department for Children, School and Families, seeks to recognise outstanding practice in the international dimensions of teaching and learning.

At the time head teacher Fran Warden said: “We are absolutely delighted at this national recognition.”
