A Polish man extradited back to Britain has been remanded in custody over the death of a top Bradford diver in a road accident.

Lukasz Banasik, 22, was flown from Poland yesterday and arrested by Hampshire Police investigating the death of Gavin Brown.

The diver died after being struck by a blue Vauxhall Astra on April 27, 2007, in Southampton. Mr Brown, 22, was a first-year criminology student at university in the city.

The car involved in the alleged incident was later found abandoned.

Banasik appeared at Southampton Magistrates’ Court today to face charges of causing death by dangerous driving, driving without due care and attention, failing to report an accident, driving without insurance and driving a motor vehicle otherwise than in accordance with a licence.

He was remanded in custody until a hearing on December 22.

Yesterday, Mr Brown’s mother Christine Brown, of Cottingley, Bingley, said the family were still struggling to cope with his death and intended to attend any trial.

“I spoke to Gavin in the early hours of the morning just before it happened,” she said. “To actually see him in intensive care – at that moment the anger you feel is paramount. We hope the court case will put a small part of that anger aside and we can carry on with living a bit.

“You never expect these things to happen to you and it is totally devastating.”

“I will be in court for the trial – me and my family. We have to be."

Mrs Brown said the country’s elite divers had also not forgotten her son: “Blake (Aldridge) did a sponsored skydive to help raise money for Brake, the road safety charity.”
