Boxing legend Richard Dunn was back in the ring last night at the opening of a new Bradford boxing club where he shared his knowledge with potential future champions.

The former British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion, who famously took on Muhammad Ali in 1976 for the world title, met budding sports stars at the TFD Boxing Club in Broadstone Way, Holme Wood.

The 63-year-old watched on as 11-year-old Mitchell Oddy, of Knowles Avenue, was one of the first to train in the new ring with uncle Robert Nelson, 29.

He said: “I’m really impressed. Its a great place for the young people to come to.”

Richard Dunn had previously cut the ribbon to declare the new gym, at the TFD Youth Centre, open.

The non-contact gym boasts punch bags, wall punch bags, treadmills and rowing machines which will be used by groups of young people from ten upwards.

Bradford super featherweight Femi Fehintola was also on hand at the new gym.

Its walls plastered with posters of boxing heroes including Bradford boxers Junior Witter and Nadeem Siddique.

Mr Dunn, who now lives in Scarborough, was at the opening with his 17-year-old grandson Richard Plummer.

He said: “Its great to be back in Bradford.

“I’ve not been back for years, but I was asked if I would come and open this new gym and it has been my pleasure.

“I think this is a really great idea to encourage people off the streets and into exercise.”

The new gym was set up by youth worker Talish Butt to discourage youngsters on the tough estate from crime and antisocial behaviour.

Councillor Michael Kelly, the Council’s Executive Member for Services to Children and Young People, was among scores of children and parents at the gym’s opening this evening.

He told them: “I wanted to come and meet the icon and legend that is Richard Dunn, who has come from his home in Scarborough, which gives a true indication of the affection he holds for Bradford.”

Mr Butt said: “The boxing club aims to promote a level of discipline, fitness, concentration and respect with young people, and it is also a way of encouraging young people who are NEET (not in education, employment or training) to enhance their life skills.”
