A multi-cultural football event to combat racism involved children from eight schools in Bradford.

Manningham Sports Centre hosted a ninth annual football tournament where secondary school children helped teachers coach their younger primary school counterparts.

Schools from different areas of the district and beyond were invited to the event which was held under the Kick It Out anti-racism football campaign banner.

The County Football Association, Springwood Community Primary School, Challenge College and Bradford City Football Club supported the day’s action, with Bantams club captain Zesh Rehman on hand to award medals and team trophies to the young stars.

The primary schools which took part were Girlington, Springwood, Green Lane, Buttershaw, Appleton Academy, Merlin Top and Thornton in Bradford, and Strawberry Fields, Garforth.

Organiser Khalil Hussain said: “A lot of them were surprised by what happened.

“They expected to play for their team but we mixed them up and they had lots of fun.”
