A community project which offers good quality second-hand furniture, household items and clothing at affordable prices is set to expand with the help of social landlord Incommunities.

The housing group’s charitable arm, Incommunities Foundation Ltd, has given Newlands Furniture Service £30,000 to help more people, including those on low incomes.

Newlands, formerly the Thorpe Edge Furniture Service, has been running for 20 years and relies on the help of volunteers.

It has furniture showrooms at Thorpe Edge and Greengates, as well as community shop Bargain Box, at York House, in Thorpe Edge.

The project also includes a collection service for people wishing to donate items and a house clearance service.

Newlands manager Brenda Rhodes said: “We provide an invaluable furniture recycling service aimed at people mainly on low incomes across Bradford. The support of Incommunities Foundation will help us to expand and better meet the needs of new Incommunities tenants who have little or no furniture.

“This includes providing ‘starter packs’ to help people move into their new home as soon as possible.”

The Incommunities funding will go towards improving the project’s outlets, attracting customers with an internet sales site and supporting training opportunities for people.
