Bright spark Uwais Zamin got behind the lens with a Telegraph & Argus photographer after his aspirational tale won a competition.

The nine-year-old, of Great Horton, Bradford, was one of numerous young people, aged five to 11, who wrote a letter describing who they wanted to be and why as part of Bradford Council’s B-Someone campaign.

Hollingwood Primary School pupil Uwais had his letter picked at random to win a digital camera and an hour-long photography masterclass with T&A photographer Lucy Ray, who talked him through examples of her work, gave him a lesson in capturing the perfect image and a rundown of what makes a good camera.

In Uwais’s letter he wrote about his dreams of becoming both a doctor and a scientist.

He said: “No-one in my family has been a doctor or a scientist. I want to make my own medicines and help people all over the world who have a problem which has not got a cure for it.”

Councillor Michael Kelly, the Council’s executive member for services to children and young people, presented Uwais with his camera. He said: “He is very clear in his mind what he wants to do. When you read his story it goes right to your heart and when you meet the young man you find he’s delightful, very enquiring with an enthusiasm for everything he’s doing, so he’s a very worthwhile winner.”

The B-Someone campaign was rolled out around the district at the start of the year as part of the Council’s ‘year of education’.
