A group which runs a range of educational courses for adults is in the running for the Bradford’s Best Community Project award.

The Queensbury Community Programme has been running since 1984, offering social and educational opportunities for residents in the area.

The group runs a range of educational courses, from computing and digital photography to flower-arranging and Indian head massages.

The group was formed by Queensbury School, where it holds many evening courses, but since its inception it has grown and acquired its own room at Victoria Hall in Queensbury.

Development manager Kathryn Halford said: “The community programme is to offer learning opportunities for everybody in the local and surrounding areas.

“We focus a lot on older people, which is good because it helps keep them active and socially included.

“We have got some fantastic groups now – they look forward to it as well, because it is a social thing as well.”

The group charges from £1 to £3 per session, which have been well-received by members of the community since the programme formed.

Miss Halford said: “We have got quite a varied range of courses. If someone comes along and says they want to do yoga, we could find a yoga teacher and get some classes going.”

The programme was nominated by Mike Hinton, of Wibsey, who has attended many classes and now volunteers at the Computers Don’t Byte sessions – a course designed for those who know very little about computers.

Mr Hinton, 64, said: “I’m in my 60s and I’m not used to computers, so it’s really helped me with that.”
