A 20-year-old man broke a police officer’s wrist in a violent disturbance at his family home.

Amar Shaffi smashed his bedroom window and threatened to “gut” officers with a shard of broken glass, Bradford Crown Court heard yesterday.

Shaffi, of Highfield Crescent, Heaton, Bradford, pleaded guilty at Bingley Magistrates’ Court today to affray on July 24 and assaulting a police constable.

The case was sent to Crown Court for sentence.

Prosecutor Louise Azmi said police were called to the home Shaffi shared with his parents after reports he had assaulted his mother.

Shaffi was “agitated and irate”, charging at Inspector Steve Greenbank and banging him against a wall, Mrs Azmi said. Shaffi threatened to kill arresting officers, who sprayed CS gas into his bedroom.

Police heard glass breaking and saw Shaffi on the roof of a first-floor extension. He threw a large piece of glass towards a police officer.

Shaffi then picked up a 10ins shard of glass and warned: “I’m going to gut you”, before he was arrested.

Mrs Azmi said PC Sam Beck suffered a minor fracture to his wrist.

Shaffi’s barrister, Gerald Hendron, said: “He accepts his behaviour was a complete loss of control.”

Shaffi had spent six weeks in custody, the court heard.

Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC sentenced him to a two-year community order with supervision. He must attend an anger-management project and do 150 hours’ unpaid work.

He was ordered to pay PC Beck £350 compensation and £250 prosecution costs.

The Judge conceded the police would probably be intensely irritated that Shaffi had not been locked up.

But he said Shaffi had put a lot of effort into his local community and had good references from his employer.
