Alhambra theatregoers could be queuing for interval ice-creams with Hollywood A-listers Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas next month.

The glamorous couple have been invited to Bradford Catholic Players’ production of 42nd Street, which features a costume originally worn by Catherine Zeta Jones.

The dress will be worn by Katie Carroll, who stars as young showgirl Peggy Sawyer, the role Miss Zeta Jones played in the West End.

“We got the costume from a costumiers in Oldham,” said Catholic Players member Debbie Carroll. “Catherine must have been tiny. Thankfully Katie is petite and it fits. She’s very excited to be wearing a piece of theatre history!”

The Welsh movie star wore the costume in 1986 when she was in 42nd Street. “Her real life story echoes that of the show,” said Miss Carroll. “Catherine was in the chorus when the leading lady and understudy were struck down ill, so it fell to her to step into the role.

“We have written to her agents in London and invited Catherine and Michael to the show. You never know!”

This year’s charity production will be raising money for Bradford’s Marie Curie Hospice and the Bradford and District Autism Support Group.

* 42nd Street runs at the Alhambra from November 24 to 28. Tickets are available on (01274) 432000.
