A former boxing coach has been nominated for a Bradford’s Best Citizen award for inspiring the city’s youngsters to use their time in a positive way.

Alec Allan, 80, who coached former world champion Junior Witter and fellow Bradford professional Nadeem Siddique, set up the boxing sessions at the Bradford Police Boys Club, off Thornton Road, to “keep kids off the streets”.

Mr Witter dedicated his world title win to Mr Allan, his former mentor. Another young boxer, Tasif Khan, 26, of Durham Road, Girlington, Bradford, nominated Mr Allan for the award.

He said: “The club is in the heart of an area where there is a lack of opportunities for young people.

“Mr Allan gave these kids a chance to not have to hang out on the streets. They put their energy into boxing rather than anything negative.

“He helps young people and old people. I don’t think there is anyone else that comes close to him.”

Devout Christian Mr Allan, of Thornton, Bradford, a former teacher at Rhodesway School, does the weekly shopping and gardening for his neighbours. He is now a church steward at Thornton Methodist Church.

Mr Allan coached the youngsters until four years ago. He said: “It was about taking kids off the streets and giving them some object in life.

“I am amazed to have been nominated and when I look at the people that have received awards I don’t think I’m worth it – I’m really pleased.

“What I do isn’t for a nomination. It’s because I like to help in the community.

“I felt if you give kids aims they will find their way in life better.”
