Two brothers who viciously assaulted an innocent man at an engagement party were jailed today.

Jonathan and Nicholas Stoker were both sentenced to 15 months’ imprisonment for their joint attack on Anthony Barker.

Jonathan Stoker, 32, of Staveley Way, Keighley, and his 31-year-old brother, of Balfour Street, Knowle Park, Keighley, pleaded guilty to causing actual bodily harm.

Judge Jonathan Rose said it was a “vicious, determined and persistent assault” on an innocent man. He told the brothers their behaviour was the “sort of drunken thuggery normally associated with younger men.”

He said: “What happened was a joint attack, two grown men acting together for no reason other than revenge.”

Prosecutor Stephen Wood said Nicholas Stoker and his partner had been celebrating their engagement with a party at their home address in Balfour Street in October last year. Mr Barker and his girlfriend had been invited and arrived at 11pm after going on a pub crawl.

Mr Barker was outside the house and witnessed an “unsavoury” argument between his girlfriend and another woman.

Mr Wood said both defendants then ran from the house and attacked Mr Barker. He was knocked unconscious and his girlfriend saw both defendants repeatedly kicking him.

Mr Barker was taken to hospital where X-rays revealed multiple fractures to his cheekbone. He also suffered broken teeth, a laceration to his temple and swelling to his left wrist.

Mr Wood said police attended but most of, if not all, the people at the house were drunk and incapable, or unwilling, to assist.

Nicholas Stoker was arrested and cautioned and his brother handed himself in a day later.

The court heard Jonathan Stoker wrongly thought Mr Barker had hit a child, while his brother incorrectly believed the victim had struck his partner.
