Big Brother’s first winner Craig Phillips was among about 300 guests invited to celebrate the DIY and gardening talents of a social housing group’s tenants.

The builder-turned-TV presenter spoke about his rise to fame at the Incommunities seventh annual Home & Garden Show at the Midland Hotel in Bradford yesterday.

The event, supported by the Telegraph & Argus, also welcomed BBC TV gardener Joe Swift and top floral designer Jonathan Moseley.

The winners of the competition were announced at a glittering ceremony in the hotel’s Princes Ballroom.

Mr Phillips, star of ITV’s 60 Minute Makeover, said: “I have been speaking to the community about how DIY has helped me and my background in the building industry before Big Brother, how people should celebrate DIY and get more people to do it.

“I think all the competition entries have been great and might even use some of their ideas on 60 Minute Makeover.”

After looking at the garden entries, Mr Swift said: “I know how much work goes into it – even getting a little window box or some pots growing – everyone has taken so much care and the results have been fantastic.”

More than 60 Incommunities tenants entered this year’s show by sending in photos of their gardens, floral displays, patios and stylish home makeovers.

Visitors also picked up gardening and home makeover tips from the experts.

Everyone who entered was sent a personal invitation to the awards ceremony.

Geraldine Howley, group chief executive for Incommunities, said: “This has been all about celebrating the great things that our tenants do in terms of their homes and gardens and what makes them, and us, proud.

“The competition has become very popular because of the number of homes and gardens programmes on TV and there has been a lot of people entering this year.

“There has been some really good entries with a lot of care taken over them, which all shows what a great community spirit there is in Bradford district.”
