People are encouraged to brush up on their oral health skills as part of Colgate Oral Health Month.

The dental team at NHS Bradford and Airedale is offering advice on good oral health to local residents.

The NHS staff will be at Tesco in Buttershaw this week to give advice on oral health routines and tips on how to look after teeth.

Until Friday, there will be a tooth brushing station at the supermarket from 9.30am to 4.30pm. Hygienists will be on hand to offer tips, demonstrations and oral health advice.

On Saturday and Sunday, representatives from the oral health improvement team will be available from 11am to 4pm to answer questions and give information.

The project is part of NHS Bradford and Airedale’s oral health strategy and plan which has seen teams working to provide a range of programmes aimed at the under fives.

The oral health of young children in Bradford and Airedale is poor compared to neighbouring areas and nationally, with more than half of children having experienced some dental disease.

Projects include tooth brushing and education programmes for communities, health professionals, children and their parents.

Last year a fluoride varnish scheme was started in a bid to reduce dental decay in under fives, which has seen teams go in to children’s centres in Bradford and Keighley, to apply the varnish to children’s teeth.

It is a layer of gel, which then sets and the fluoride is absorbed into the enamel and protects teeth for up to six months.
