A murder investigation is under way today after a body was found at a block of flats in the Thornton Road area of Bradford.

Detectives have named the deceased man as Bradford-born Ranjib Singh Bassra, 48, who is believed to have relatives living in London.

Mr Bassra’s family have been informed of his death.

It is understood that he lived in a flat in the vicinity of Thornton Road and had previously resided in the West Bowling area of the city for several years.

The police spokesman said officers from Airedale and North Bradford division were alerted to the discovery of his body inside a building on the Thornton village side of Thornton Road, near Four Lane Ends, west of the city centre, at around 2.20pm on Thursday.

An ambulance was first to the scene and paramedics called the police on discovery of the body. The police spokesman could not confirm whether the scene was the home address of the deceased.

Detectives are treating the incident as a murder investigation since a post-mortem examination at the city mortuary on Saturday, when medical evidence indicated that Mr Bassra had not seemingly died of any pre-existing medical conditions but as a result of internal head injuries.

It is not known at this stage exactly how long Mr Bassra had been dead prior to the discovery of his body.

It also not clear how he sustained the fatal injuries or whether a weapon was used, but the nature of his injuries were considered serious enough by police to trigger a murder probe.

Officers from West Yorkshire Police’s Homicide and Major Enquiries Team are handling the investigation and last night they were continuing their inquiries to try to piece together the full circumstances surrounding Mr Bassra’s sudden death.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: “A 26-year-old Bradford man has been arrested in connection with the incident and has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.”
