Rita, Sue And Bob Too (1987)

The T&A’s late theatre and film correspondent Peter Holdsworth loved this movie when it came out 22 years ago.

While some people on Buttershaw estate were jumping up and down in righteous anger at the reportedly smutty portrayal of their estate, Holdsworth said its author, Bradford-born Andrea Dunbar, had a gift for rumbustuous comedy that reminded him of Chaucer.

Dunbar told the T&A that she was less interested in geographic realism than in the timeless comedy of human behaviour.

It was set in Bradford because that is where she came from.

The story follows the escapades of two teenage girls from a tough estate and their affair with Bob, a sexually-frustrated married man whose snobby wife has social pretensions.

The cast includes Michelle Holmes (Sue), Siobhan Finneran (Rita), George Costigan (Bob), Danny O’Dea and the band Black Lace.

The film cost £850,000 and propelled Andrea Dunbar into the limelight. Andrea died of a brain haemorrhage at the age of 29.

Producer Sandy Lieberson said: “We were particularly surprised by reviews that suggested we portrayed the residents of Buttershaw unfairly.”
