Union bosses have criticised the “cynicism” of one of the Bradford district’s largest employers after it announced another round of job cuts less than three months after making 90 redundancies.

Workers at Denso Marston in Shipley, which now employs 565 staff following a round of redundancies in March, face more cuts after it was announced the company would shed a further 78 jobs. The majority will be manual workers, with 59 people who work on the factory floor being made redundant Denso, which makes equipment such as car radiators, blames falling sales and the current economic crisis on its decision to axe more jobs.

The decision comes after moves to cut costs, including laying off staff, stopping overtime and changing shift patterns, failed.

Steve Jennings, senior organiser for the GMB union, said he feared there would be more redundancies.

He said: “I believe that the way this has been done, in two waves of redundancies, is either poor management or a cynical ploy to stop people getting their full notice entitlement.

“The way this has been dropped on people is unbelievable. Our members have taken pay cuts, have been put down to three days working and now this.”

One 46-year-old worker who has been at the factory for 25 years, said: “It is not the company’s fault that they have to make cuts, it is the economic climate but the feeling on the shop floor is that they are just doing what they want. They are just walking all over us.”

Mr Jennings urged bosses at Denso to speak to the union so that it could reassure its members.

He said: “If it is going to be even worse than this, we want them to talk to us.”
