Dog is destroyed for attack on pet

Kelly Gallagher and Sam Kelly Gallagher and Sam

A dog has been put down after it savaged a family pet and left it needing almost 100 stitches to its stomach.

The animal, described as a “pitbull-type dog”, attacked a border collie in the street in front of its owner.

Kelly Gallagher of Springfield, Queensbury, said her family dog Sam, an 11-year-old border collie, was almost torn to pieces by the other animal.

The attack lasted for up to 15 minutes and Sam required emergency veterinary treatment.

Miss Gallagher said: “He looks like two dogs stapled together – he is lucky he wasn’t killed.

“I phoned the police and was told it was a problem for the dog wardens. I phoned them and reported the dog and they said they did not deal with ‘dog on dog’ incidents.

“So far we know this dog has attacked three dogs and killed one of them. My mother said to the wardens ‘what if this happened to a child?’ But they didn’t seem bothered.”

Queensbury Councillor Michael Walls said: “I will demanding to know what is being done about this. As a dog owner and former policeman I would say it smacks of incompetence and a lack of compassion.

“We have had over 30 years of serious dog attacks on other dogs and children and something must be done about it.”

John Major, Bradford Council’s Assistant Director Environmental Health, said that following the complaints the situation had been dealt with.

He said: “We were first notified of the attack last Tuesday – even though we are told the attack happened on March 5.

“We acted promptly and a dog warden visited her on Wednesday and the owner of the nuisance dog was contacted on Thursday.

“The dog has been put down after the owner surrendered the animal to the dog warden service. He claimed to have taken the dog in as a stray in late February.

“Normally the police are responsible for dealing with any complaints involving banned breeds and for dealing with dogs that are out of control in a public place where people are attacked or threatened. The Council is responsible for dealing with stray dogs or nuisance dogs only when one dog attacks another. We liaise with the police to try and ensure that one or other organisation effectively deals with any complaint.”

Would be interesting for the T & A to contact the police and find out why they passed the buck on this (as per usual)

4 years ago a bull terrier attacked my tiny Norwich terrier and injured her badly. We rushed our dog to the vets where she had to stay overnight as they feared she may die of shock. I rang the police when we got home nd a police officer was with us within an hour. The matter was dealt with promptly and i had only praise for the police action.

Siouxie, good to see a positive comment about the Police action taken - nice one. Some people take great delight in blaming Police at every opportunity - a bit like Mike Strutter, who answered to his own comment as it says Police get involved when PEOPLE are attacked or threatened - but hey Mike your just another one of the many who blame the Police without any substance or knowledge of the facts when the facts as there staring you in the face. Dogs are not people.

Glad Sam survived, hope he's able to get over it well.

My little jack russel patch was attacked by one of these dogs. The people who owned the dog paid the vets bill for us but its not the point. They used to walk it late on at night so no-one could see the breed.these dogs need rounding up and destroying. They are very aggresive and these people had a toddler in there house. My dog was thrown around like a teddy, and i had to open the other dogs mouth when the owner jumped on its back.If a child pulls its tail and aggrivates it there could be a human death too.
Good luck Sam

I had the same response from the good old West Yorkshire police last summer. I was driving down Beacon Road when i saw a lady and her dog being attacked by a pitbull terrier type dog. I pulled up and so did another man and we managed to pull the dog off by nearly strangling it with it's coller before it would let go. We then managed to tie the dog to a lamppost with a bit of old rope. This is when i rang WYP and i was told i would have to ring the dog warden service even though it was 3 in the afternoon on a Sunday as it wasn't a police incident. So i rang the dog warden and didn't get an answer so i then rang WYP back explained the facts again like the lady was injured and that we didn't know where the dog had come from. So what were we meant to do leave it tied to the lampost but were once again told it wasn't a police matter. Luckily just at that moment a police car was coming down the road so i flagged it down. If they hadn't been coming down the road i don't think that they would have come out.

Harry, my Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was attacked by just such a dog on Hazelhurst Quarry in Queensbury 4 years ago. I was shocked by the ferocity of the attack. The police took no action. The dog warden just warned the owner. The very rude owner of the dog refused to pay my vet bills. Harry never really got over his injuries and died last year. Interested to know if it was the same dog?

It seems dangerous dogs are becoming more and more popular, Ive been told Certain people are using them for protection when dealing drugs, As they can't get done for walking a dog as they could for carrying a knife or a gun.
The fact that people just open their doors and let any dog to roam the streets because they cant be bothered walking it is totally appalling.
I am a dog owner myself and whenever i see one of the akita, staff, pittbull variety i always cross the road or lift my dog.

I cant imagine how bad it must be to go through a visious attack,
The dog warden should constantly be drivin around picking up dogs not on a lead, EVERYONE should by law have to have a dog licence and dogs should always be on a lead in public areas. As for USMAN SARWAR.... Well, we all know what he is.

The police are useless. Most of them r not police but jumped up individuals who are called community bods who have over inflated egos.
