Ministers are right to tackle extremism at a younger age as schools and colleges are a breeding ground for radicals, a Muslim leader has said.

Chair of Ahmadiya Muslim Association Bary Malik welcomed moves to give material to schools and further education colleges to encourage discussion among students.

He said: “Unfortunately the education institutes have always been the breeding ground traditionally.

“This started in Pakistan in the 1970s so British education institutes are under threat. What Government is doing is the right step.

“Anything that can help stop young people becoming extremists and involved in terror activities in any way is always welcomed.”

Colleges and sixth forms will be given advice on promoting free debate through a booklet. Ministers hope it will raise awareness among young people about the danger posed by extremists.

A spokesman for Bradford Council of Mosques said: “I think it is positive. However if this is going to be successful then it is important that local communities are won over.

“It is vital schools and colleges tell the communities what they are doing to immobilise local support. They need to work with parents too if the initiative is going to have the maximum impact.”
