Work is set to begin on the regeneration of Yeadon at a total cost of more than £900,000.
Contractors are due to begin work on the scheme on April 20, and it is hoped it will be completed by the end of October.
Yeadon councillor Colin Campbell said: “We have a start date on the biggest town and regeneration scheme in Leeds.”
He said the scheme would turn High Street into a pedestrian-friendly shopping area.
“What they are basically proposing is that we re-do just about the whole of the High Street, and I hope it will be the envy of just about everybody in the city,” he said. “At the moment the High Street is a bit too car-friendly for us, and a bit less pedestrian-friendly than we would like.
The scheme will include road and pavement resurfacing and new street lights.
Pavements will be re-figured and more crossing points made for pedestrians.
Although cars will not be banned the changes will encourage drivers to slow down.
The scheme will also mean slight changes to parking spaces on the street.
