A judge watched CCTV clips of a driver pursued by police round the centre of Bradford.
Anwar Miah, 23, was caught jumping a red light, ignoring a ‘no entry’ sign and speeding the wrong way down Westgate.
Miah, of Upper Rushton Road, Thornbury, Bradford, was arrested after pulling up by the Netto store in Manningham Lane after the late-night pursuit.
He was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, suspended for 12 months, after pleading guilty to dangerous driving and having no insurance or full licence.
Miah was banned from driving for 12 months and ordered to pay £200 court costs.
Prosecutor Richard Davies said traffic officers became suspicious of Miah’s car after 11pm on July 8 last year.
CCTV footage and film from the patrol car’s video camera were played to Judge Shaun Spencer QC at Bradford Crown Court.
Mr Davies said Miah had a previous conviction for dangerous driving.
His barrister, Chloe Hudson, asked the judge not to jail him for “a stupid and foolish mistake”.
