Christmas bargain hunters were today warned by police not to be tempted by black market goods after a £60,000 raid on a Bradford department store.

The haul, including perfumes and electrical goods, was taken by four masked burglars who forced their way into TJ Hughes in Godwin Street.

They left with their bounty, which also included items of luggage, from the shop’s Thornton Road exit.

Detective Constable Craig Judd, of Bradford South CID, said: “A large amount of goods were taken from the store and are the kinds of items that could potentially be sold on as Christmas presents.

“I am therefore appealing for anyone who is offered such items in the street or at car boot sales or similar, to contact us.”

Bradford Chamber of Trade has also warned people to beware of exceptional bargains and inform police of anyone trying to hawk the stolen goods.

Chamber secretary Val Summerscales said: “People need to be aware if such goods are offered at unrealistic prices they are probably not legitimate.

“We concur with the police and we would support any concerned shoppers in making the police aware if they think any goods they are offered may have come from the theft. Shoppers must also be aware that if they buy from illegitimate sources they will have no recourse if the goods are faulty and so we hope that people will be vigilant.”

Police have appealed for anyone with information about the raid, which occurred when the shop was shut between last Friday and Saturday, to contact Bradford South CID on 0845 6060606.
