More than 300 motorists were stopped and breathalysed during an early morning crackdown on drink and drug driving in Bradford today.

Police arrested one person for being over the limit during the two-hour operation in St Enoch’s Road, Wibsey, Bradford.

The operation took place between 7am and 9am as a reminder to motorists that people can still be over the limit the morning after.

As part of West Yorkshire Police’s pre-Christmas campaign, further roadside testing operations will be carried out over the coming weeks.

Police said the main focus of the operation was to raise awareness among motorists of the action being taken to combat drink and drug driving.

Inspector Chris Norbury, of West Yorkshire Police, said: “Officers will be actively targeting people who drink and drive.

“I ask any member of the public whether they could forgive themselves if they were responsible for a death because they were under the influence of alcohol.

“By all means have fun and enjoy the festive season but if you’re out to have a drink then leave your vehicle at home and make alternative methods of transport.

“Having a designated driver who is not going to drink at all is one option, as is finding alternative means of transport such as buses and taxis.”

Councillor David Green, Labour group spokesman for transport and highways, said: “I welcome anything that’s going to make people aware of the dangers of drink driving and reduce the number of people who drink and drive over the festive season. Experience would indicate this is the time of year when people perhaps take a few more risks.

“Anything that can be done to catch those who commit this type of offence is also to be welcomed.”
