Parents and staff at a Clayton school are petitioning Bradford Council for a permanent crossing following a child being in collision with a car.

They are also concerned that there has been no crossing guard to supervise the children crossing the road for some months.

Parents at St Anthony’s Roman Catholic Primary School on Bradford Road have formed a road safety action group after the incident involving the pupil.

Parent Myron Krywyszyn said: “Fortunately the child was not seriously hurt but one parent I spoke to said that he went right up onto the bonnet of the car. We obviously don’t want anything like that to happen again. I have a young daughter at the school and there is no crossing and currently no crossing guard there either.”

A spokesman for St Anthony’s said: “We have set up a road safety action group and we are in the process of putting things into action.

‘‘We would love to see a dedicated crossing erected at the school.”

Steve Thornton, principal engineer for Bradford Council’s traffic and highways south, said: “We will be happy to work with the parents and St Anthony’s School to look into ways of making this area safer.”

A spokesperson for Education Bradford said the school crossing patrol operative had retired and they were looking for a replacement.

Anxious parents are pictured crossing the road in front of the school with their children.
