Historic signing to boost relations

Historic new national guidelines to build co-operation between Christians and Muslims are due to be unveiled in Bradford tomorrow.

They have been drawn up by the Deobandi Association of Muslim Scholars of Britain (JUB) and Church of England working party.

They acknowledge that the faiths’ mutual perceptions of each other are often built on ignorance and a difficult international situation.

And they state: “We are determined not to allow international relations – over which we have no direct control – to dictate how we relate to each other in our cities as British citizens.

“British Muslims are no more responsible collectively for such terrorist atrocities as those committed in London on July 7, 2005, than British Christians are for the excesses of western foreign policy.”

Dr Philip Lewis, interfaith adviser to the Bishop of Bradford, described the guidelines as a milestone between the two religions.

He said: “This is an historic first, and it’s very encouraging that these guidelines have been produced in the present climate. We’ve long had relations at city-wide level, but relations have to move to local areas, where we live together.”

Ishtiaq Ahmed, of Bradford Council of Mosques, said: “This is a tremendously important step. There are still a lot of reservations between the two faiths and people must realise the need for faith leaders to be seen to be working together.

“We hope this will set a positive example.”

The Bishop of Bradford, the Right Reverend David James, said: “Bradford is a very appropriate place to host the signing of the guidelines because in the city there are many examples of Christian and Muslim leaders working in partnership.”

The Bishop is signing the guidelines with Mufti Aslam, president of JUB, at Bradford City Hall.

This may be a good thing for religious minded people ,but im afraid the average man about town is still going to blame the majority , especially as it is an alien religion to this country.and were not the purpotrators of the july bombings from this neck of the woods.

It's a good job us non believers can see through this garbage. Christians and Muslims will never see eye to eye whatever is written on a piece of paper. Just look at every other country in this world where religion mixes eastern europe, russia & middle east conflict is abound. Perhaps we should follow Saudi policy and have a single faith country ( try building a church and practising christianity over there ) and perhaps we could keep our british identity and not just become a firework readt to explode.

No its not a milestone Vicar, its a con. The speeches made at the mosques in Bradford, many of them funded by Saudi fundamentalists means we will see more division not less, more segregation between infidels(thats what they call us every Friday Vicar) and true believers (not us). Their teachings are clear - use any means you can to convert the infidels - until they renounce their desire for a single muslim state there is no 'understanding' and until all men and women are are treated as equals how can the C of E agree to any 'guidelines' or is the Bishop happy to approve the stoning to death of women accused of adultery on a regular basis ?

This 'cause' could be enhanced somewhat if someone took the 'yoof massif init' brigade to one side and had a 'word'. I for one am sick of being intimidated while on foot in Bradford and amazed by the open lawlessnes on the road. Keeping the arears where these people live clean and tidy and learning the language would help some too.

If it were appropriate it would be for exactly the opposite reason. Bradford is the place where there is least trust.

For years we put up with the Muslim spouted line that 'terrorists could not be home grown'. Then came the Tube and Bus bombs which finally put the nail in the coffin of that particular line.

We know the truth, we see it every day and stupid stunts like this will not make people close their eyes to the danger within that we have allowed to fester while pussyfooting do-gooders and apologists for evil turn the other cheek.

Exactly right fools like this man must be living in a diffrent place from me, the small minority of people who follow "religion" and meet others who do the same in churches , mosques etc have this blinkered beleif that people want to get along with each other. get real it will never happen it's human nature to be wary of that what you do not know, like or understand. if you let people walk over you be it by legal or illegal means they will conquer and that is what will eventualy happen and then we won't have to worry about what the reverend says because he will have been dispatched for practicing a religion other than the muslim one.

What an ill informed comment. People like you cause divisions. The vast majority of muslims in Bradford are ahle-sunnah wal jammat and wouldnt take a dime of saudis. All the mosques you see are actually built with donations form the community. Shame our churches are closing down as christianity is for xmas only.

Not being a Christian i dont regard it as a shame at all, the two religions between them are responsible for too much suffering as it is.

Anything that helps people to understand and recognise our common humanity has to be a good thing, and it's an honour for Bradford to be at the forefront of this move towards harmonious community relations.

Of course our communities aren't perfect - we're human, and fallible, but by reaching out and showing friendship and respect for each other, we can overcome the politicisation of religion and have a happier and more united community.

Well done and thank you to everyone who has put their time, energy and love into this.

I notice in these days of forced political correctness where minorities, different races, disabled etc etc are put on pedestals, relations between different races and religions actually seem to be more strained than they did when I was at school 15 years ago. People now notice others for beliefs or colour, whereas back then no-one really cared.

A lot of it comes from the aftermath of the riots as well.

An Open Letter to the Secretary of State for Education Ed Balls

The debate over the trajectory of the western sociopolitical system and its strained relations with Islam is the most pivotal of our time. Muslims are in one of the most difficult phases of their history when malicious attacks including allegation of terrorism are being made on Islam and Muslims all over the world. The malicious campaign against Muslims is politically motivated. The world is obsessed by Islam. Anti-terror measures are ruining lives of Muslim youths. If you go around arresting young Muslims, you are going to find that you are going to ostracise this community. Young Muslims don’t need to be ostracized, they need to be engaged. According to the Arch Bishop, Rowan Williams, acceptance of some facets of Sharia not only “seems unavoidable”, but could actually improve social cohesion. Muslims should be able to choose to have marital or financial matters dealt with in a Sharia Court. Such courts should therefore be incorporated into the British legal system as a constructive accommodation with Islam. Schools are being asked to help “win hearts and minds” in the battle against violent extremists on both sides. British born Imams should go into schools to supplement the teaching of RE, PSHE and Citizenship so that all pupils can learn about the Holy Quran and Islam in the context of a multicultural society. OFSTED must make sure that their services should be fully utilised by the schools, otherwise, it will be waste of public money.

The British Establishment is wrong to assert that Imams and Masajid have been radicalising Muslim youths. The roots of extremism are in the British society and schools where institutional racism is at its peak. The racism within schools has got little media coverage. The school attended by 7/7 bombers in a part of Leeds known for its history of racial tension between British Asians and native Brits. Leeds council was so worried about the violence that it had to call in Foundation for Peace, a government funded peacekeepers who were used to keep Catholics and Protestants from killing one another in Northern Ireland. True message of Islam should be promoted because British media and society have always portrayed Islam in a negative way since Crusades and the siege of Vienna in 1683. School Curriculum should be used to convey a deeper understanding of Islamic faith, history and culture. Prison is not the answer of those who are vulnerable to, or are being drawn into violent extremism unless they have clearly committed an offence.

The greatest challenge to humanity is learning to live in a crowded and interconnected world that is creating unprecedented pressures on human society. The rector of Oxford’s largest Anglican Churches has called a Muslim call to prayers from the main Masjid “un-English”. This is a clear case of intolerance. Gibraltar is a British colony. Five Pound currency note has a queen image on one side and on the other side there is an image of the Muslim Conqueror with a sword in his hand. There is more hatred of Muslims seduced by the Western media, education system and church leaders like Bishop Nazir Ali. Catholic nuns have worn veils for centuries, with no public controversies arising. There is no reason why any girl’s school uniform can not now be modified to include a veil. Wearing a veil to school or to work must be a matter of choice for all.

you claim that the roots of the problem are the Racist institutions, i think you should do a quick check of the Human Rights Violations happening in 50 of the 53 Islamic States around the world and try again.

Until the mid-nineties, the government's British Crime Survey only asked ethnic minority groups whether they had been the victim of a crime which was racially motivated. Since then, all victims are asked and the picture has changed dramatically.

The most recent analysis shows that in 2004, 87,000 people from black or minority ethnic communities (BME) said they had been a victim of a racially motivated crime. In the same period, 92,000 white people said they had also fallen victim.

Focusing on violent racial attacks, 49,000 BME were victims. Among whites, the number was 77,000.

Of those that involved wounding 4,000 were BME. Among the white population it was 20,000.

Kindda show's you the truth of "racial Attacks" and the growing trend of just who is more at risk.
