A campaign group is urging people who want to comment on new plans for the former Bridge End Cattle Market in Otley to do so quickly.

Wharfe Bridge Ltd wants to create a 30-space car park on the riverside site, which is on a flood plain.

The closing date for comments on the proposals, which can be viewed at Otley Library, is Thursday, July 24.

Conserve Otley Riverside Campaign (CORC) member Cathy Liddicott said: “There are very strict planning guidelines about what is acceptable on this important area of functional floodplain, which is also part of Otley Conservation Area.

“If the car park plan is acceptable to the city council and Environment Agency – and we don’t know if it is yet – CORC would want to be sure the whole site, and not just part, will be appropriately landscaped and planted so that it is a high quality amenity for the town.

“Any planning consent on this important site will need to protect the flood storage capacity and enhance the views into and out of the riverside Conservation Area.

“We urge residents to view the plans in the library and send comments to Leeds Planning Department before the closing date.”

Wharfe Bridge recently abandoned an appeal over a 60-home scheme it had for the site, which Leeds City Council rejected last year after hearing from the Environment Agency that the houses would be at serious risk of flooding.
