Council managers have apologised to almost 4,000 tenants receiving housing benefit, after their payments were delayed following a two-day strike of local authority workers.

Unison staff walked out on Wednesday and Thursday over pay. Their action resulted in short delays in the housing benefit payments.

Councillor Andrew Palfree-man, cabinet member responsible for finance and governance at Kirklees Council, said: “Housing benefit payments would usually be prepared on Wednesday, but unfortunately the national strike action meant we did not have enough staff time to be able to undertake this week’s work.

“Those tenants and landlords expecting a payment next Monday, July 21, will not now receive their payment until later that week.”
