If you have young children in your house, chances are that CBeebies will be something of a permanent fixture on your television screen.

Whether it’s Postman Pat sorting out his mail, PC Plum pounding the Balamory beat or Bill and Ben warbling away to each other, the adventures of the assorted characters from the hit children’s TV channel have proved hugely popular with pre-school youngsters.

Now the first-ever theatre version of the TV phenomenon is on the road, and coming to Bradford this summer.

CBeebies At The Theatre stars many of the favourite characters from the TV shows, including PC Plum, Postman Pat and his pal Jess the Cat, and Tamba from Tikkabilla.

The family musical adventure, called Let’s Play, introduces youngsters to recycling by looking at the fun in re-using everyday things that we throw away. The Jakers, Bill and Ben, Boo and even the Koala Brothers get in on the action as they join together with Tommy Zoom to combat the dastardly deeds of Polluto.

PC Plum from Balamory calls on his friend Jenny Jumble who has invented a talking recycling bin which takes everyday leftover things and turns them into something useful and fun.

With a little imagination and the bin’s help, Jenny Jumble and PC Plum sing and dance their way through a range of fun-filled adventures with their CBeebies friends. They find Boo in the jungle, charter a boat with Tamba, ride a runaway train with Postman Pat and Jess, and discover compost with Bill and Ben before joining a rock and roll band with the Jakers.

Meanwhile, Polluto is plotting to ruin the day. He hates recycling and loves rubbish, so is determined to stop the recycling bin from working.

Will Tommy Zoom, CBeebies’ favourite eco-superhero, be able to catch him in time and save the day?

Writer/director Martin Waller says CBeebies At The Theatre works because it gives children a chance to engage with their favourite characters.

“Nothing can compete with seeing your favourite star live,” he says. “The intimacy that a theatre setting provides will enhance the experience, and touring nationally allows everyone the chance to come along. “The story shows that recycling can be fun. It introduces pre-schoolers to it in a simple and fun way. And it’s not every day you get to meet a talking recycling bin! “It’s important to introduce young children to environmental issues because they have enthusiasm to learn and soak up new ideas.

“These positive messages can only be good, as hopefully it will become second nature for them to care about the world they live in. Mums, dads, grans and grandads will have fun and enjoy the show as much as kids.

“It’s a great show with well-known, lovable characters, and is a great way to introduce children to the wonder of theatre, which hopefully will stay with them for life.”

Finally, if Martin could be a CBeebies character, who would he be and why?

“Tommy Zoom – I rather fancy being a superhero,” he smiles. “And if I could hang out with one CBeebies character, it would be Blue Cow. She gets to travel a lot and do extraordinary things. She was a supermodel once!”

CBeebies At The Theatre is at St George’s Hall from August 8 to 10. For tickets ring (01274) 432000.
