Iconic Manchester band Happy Mondays will play their only northern gig this year at Bingley’s annual outdoor music festival.

And joining them in the two-day feast of great music will be 80s rockers Echo and The Bunnymen and home-grown chart-toppers Terrorvision to wow the expected huge crowds.

Mondays front man and lyricist Shaun Ryder who set up the band with his mate “Bez” will take centre stage at the Bingley Music Live in Myrtle Park at the end of August.

Bez – real name Mark Berry – is best known for his dance moves to hit songs including Kinky Afro and Step On and he became a household name when he won the third series of Channel 4’s celebrity Big Brother in 2005.

The band has split up and reformed many times, but since 2004 the group has regularly toured and played festivals, including Glastonbury.

Also headlining at the two-day event will be Alabama 3 – the British band which has achieved acclaim with their Woke Up This Morning track which was used in The Sopranos TV series.

Echo and the Bunnymen, who celebrated 30 years in the business last year, will be the star turn as they wind up proceedings as the final act on the Sunday night.

And top-class home-grown talent will come from veteran Bradford rockers Terrorvision who will make a special appearance on their home turf.

Other confirmed acts include touring bands Delays and The Infadels, both of which are set to perform at next month’s V Festival. Special guest slots are also set to be announced.

The event was launched last year following the collapse of Music in Myrtle and Party in the Park.

More than 15,000 people attended last year’s event, which was headlined by The Charlatans.

The festival was short-listed in the 2008 Best New Festival category in the Virtual Festivals awards.

Councillor Anne Hawkesworth, Bradford Council’s executive member for environment and culture, said: “Last year the event attracted thousands of people to Myrtle Park and was a fantastic showcase for local talent as well as legendary acts.

“This year is set to be even better with some fantastic acts already announced and more to come in the coming months.”

Happy Mondays will perform on Saturday, August 30. Gates open at 11.30am and the event finishes at 9.30pm. Tickets cost £12.50 and £20 on the gate.

Sunday’s event, when Alabama 3 and Echo and the Bunnymen perform, is free and takes place from 11.30am to 8.30pm.

A bar will be available over the two days.
