A police watchdog has begun an independent investigation into the death in custody of a Bradford woman.

Sharon Batey, 41, of Laisterdyke, was found collapsed in her cell at Trafalgar House police station in Bradford on Tuesday, July 8.

Attempts were made to revive her and an ambulance was called but she was pronounced dead on arrival at Bradford Royal Infirmary.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission has announced it will investigate her death.

Miss Batey had been arrested the previous afternoon for alcohol-related offences.

The IPCC said the incident had been referred to it and a decision had been taken to conduct an independent investigation.

Nicholas Long, the IPCC Commissioner for Yorkshire and Humberside, said: “The IPCC’s involvement is not necessarily an indication that West Yorkshire Police have made errors in this particular instance.

“However, we must ensure that all necessary policies and procedures were observed.”

A spokesman for the Bradford coroner said an inquest would be opened after the completion of the IPCC investigation.
